There’s something lovely about a book becoming part of family life. A character’s name finds its way into conversation. A phrase becomes a family joke. Your child asks for the same story again, even though everyone knows what happens. Weeks later, something you see on a walk reminds you of a page you read together.

You’ve made the decision to homeschool. You’ve withdrawn your child from school, bought some stationery, cleared a space at the kitchen table and perhaps spent hours researching curriculum.

One of the greatest freedoms of homeschooling is that learning doesn't have to look the same for every child. For neurodivergent children, that can be particularly powerful.

You are allowed to skip the lesson. There, we said it. You can skip an activity, a lesson, or even an entire program. You can shorten it, change it, replace it or decide it simply isn’t right for your child today. You can spend three days exploring one activity and three minutes on the next. You can skip ahead, come back to it later or move on completely.

“Are they learning enough?” It's one of the questions almost every homeschooling parent asks at some point. Maybe it's after a week that didn't go to plan. Maybe the morning was spent gardening instead of doing maths. Perhaps you happily passed an afternoon baking muffins, reading on the couch or exploring a local walking trail.

As homeschoolers, we don’t have to do the same thing all year. While summer wants us to stay a while longer, winter asks us to slow down. Oftentimes, our summer rhythm doesn’t work in winter. And that’s ok.
